We remember Sir Andrew Davis, a true maestro whose life in music touched hearts globally. From the Royal College of Music to the world’s grea...
From a dazzling debut at the age of 14 to international recognition, Bryan Cheng has fast become a sensation in the classical world. But who is this Canadian-born, Berlin-based cellist that has the world talking?
Bryan Cheng isn’t your everyday musician. His journey into the world of classical music began with a bang – a sold-out recital at the famed Carnegie Hall when he was just 14! Fast forward to age 20, he graced the stage of the Elbphilharmonie with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. And if that wasn’t enough, he etched his name in history in 2022 by becoming the first cellist to receive the prestigious Prix Yves Paternot, an honor awarded to the most promising musician at the Verbier Festival Academy.
The recent years have seen Bryan Cheng’s star rise exponentially. He made a significant splash with his performance at the Berliner Philharmonie, part of the coveted “Debüt im Deutschlandfunk Kultur” series. This platform has hosted greats like Sir Simon Rattle, Jacqueline Du Pré, and Daniel Barenboim in their early days.
But it doesn’t end there. Bryan has enchanted audiences with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, the National Arts Centre Orchestra Ottawa, and many more. And keep your eyes peeled, because he’s about to perform with orchestras like the Frankfurt Radio Symphony and the Slovak Philharmonic.
Come 2023/24, Bryan won’t just be wowing audiences with his cello. He’s taking on a larger-than-life role as the Artist-in-Residence with the “Banatul” Philharmonic Orchestra of Timisoara, Romania. Moreover, he will charm Switzerland’s Week-End Musical de Pully 2024, showcasing his duos and mesmerizing audiences with Gulda’s Cello Concerto.
Chamber music lovers, take note! Bryan, as part of the Cheng² Duo and CelloFellos, has traveled extensively, collaborating with the likes of Gidon Kremer and Angela Hewitt. His recitals have echoed through halls from Hamburg to Halifax and many stops in between.
Bryan’s discography is a testament to his versatility and talent. With three albums under the audite label and another launching in fall 2023, Bryan is on a roll. His latest album promises a fusion of commissioned pieces by composers of diverse Asian heritage.
Bryan Cheng’s journey, from the prodigious beginnings to the global stage, is nothing short of inspiring. As we celebrate him as our Artist of the Month for October 2023, here’s to many more notes, melodies, and accolades in his bright future!
